Haryana to develop Gurgaon on its own

The Haryana government has taken upon itself to develop Gurgaon as a smart city in line with Centre's guidelines.

Karnal and Faridabad are the two cities selected Haryana under the government '100 Smart Cities Mission'. Gurgaon failed the cut, as it dit not qualify based on the parameters set by the Central government.

As per the NDA-government Smart City Mission, the shortlisted 20 cities will be getting Rs 100 crore funding and an equivaliant amount will be contributed by the state government for implementaion of the proposed smart city plan.

According over a period of five years, the select city is expected to get Rs 1,000 crore funding.

Based on the same arrangement, the Haryana government now plans to arrange that Rs 500 crore on its own to develop Gurgaon into a smart city.

"As per the Centre's Smart City scheme, Rs 100 crore is given in a year for five years for developing a Smart City. So we will arrange that Rs 500 crore of our own for Gurgaon. Even though we do not get central fund, we are ready to do it of our own," Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar was quoted as saying by Economic Times news report.

"All central guidelines for the Smart City will be followed by the state including technical assistance to develop Gurgaon as Smart City.", the minister added.

Elaborating on his plan for the Gurgaon, Khattar said that the state will be focusing on e-governance to bring transparency and eliminating corruption.

All important data – like the land records, birth certificates, pension etc will be digitalised. Birth certificates will further be linked to the Aadhar cards, pursant to which the child will automatically get a voters card on attaining the voting age.

On a pilot basis, they will also introduce biometric attendance system for students and teachers in the in schools.
